Jazzschool Summer Youth Program 2013
June 17 – 21 and June 24 – 28, 2013
Two Five-Day Sessions
Monday – Friday 9:30am – 3 pm
With a student performance each Friday evening at 6pm!
All students attend a variety of daily ensembles (jazz, Latin, groove), private lessons, workshops and performances with visiting guest artists, and put on a concert to conclude each 5-day session.
Open to instrumentalists entering grades 7 – 10 for winds (sax, clarinet, flute, trumpet, trombone), strings, piano, guitar, vibes, bass and drum set and hand percussion.
Prerequisite information (for intro level ensembles)
Piano, Guitar and Vibes: Students should know how to interpret chord symbols (triads and seventh chords).
Drums: Students should have some ensemble experience and be able to keep a steady beat.
Bass: Students should know how to interpret basic chord symbols and have some ability to read in bass clef.
Horns and Strings: Students should have roughly two years of experience playing their instrument and have some knowledge of major scales.

Limited Enrollment, Early Registration Encouraged!
Tuition: $400 per week or $760 for both weeks.
Optional lunch package also available: $50 per week

2013 faculty include:
Julian Pollack (Jazz Ensemble)
Based in New York City since 2006 where he studied jazz piano and composition at NYU, Julian Pollack is a Berkeley native and graduate of the acclaimed Berkeley High School jazz program. Since relocating to New York, Julian has led his own trio and collaborated with numerous musicians including singer-songwriter Grace Weber and Broadway-star Carrie Manolakos. He also works steadily as a concert pianist and composer with commissions for orchestra and string quartet among others. Learn more about Julian here.
Jackie Rago (Latin Ensemble)
Originally from Venezuela, multi-instrumentalist Jackeline Rago specializes in the music of Venezuela and other Latin American countries. She is music director of the Venezuelan Music Project and a founding member of the VNote Ensemble. She has been a guest artist on many recordings by John Santos, Andy Narell, Rebeca Mauleon and others. Learn more about Jackie here.
Howard Wiley (Groove Ensemble)
East bay native saxophonist and drummer Howard Wiley performs regularly with Lavay Smith, Marcus Shelby and many others. He has released a number of albums under his own name including 2010’s ambitious 12 Gates to the City. Learn more about Howard here.

Refund policy: Jazzschool Summer Youth Program tuition includes a $100 non-refundable deposit (per week). No refunds are allowed after June 1st, 2013. All refund requests must be submitted in writing by emailing rob@jazzschool.org.
