5th Annual Jazzschool Girls’ Jazz & Blues Camp
August 5 – 9, 2013
OUR MISSION
As we enter our fifth year of the acclaimed “first in the nation” Jazzschool Girls’ Jazz & Blues Camp, we remain committed to our mission. Our goals are:
- To provide a supportive atmosphere where young female musicians can push their musical limits and learn new skills
- To foster enhanced self esteem and confidence
- To encourage new friendships based on a common interest
OUT-OF-TOWNERS
We are a day camp, running Monday-Friday August 5-9, 2013, from 9:30-3, with the concert on Friday Aug. 9 at 6pm. We sometimes have local camper families offering to house an out-of-town musician for the week. It can be a unique experience for campers to meet and stay with a young local Bay Area musician and her family!
If you are interested in housing, or can provide housing, please let us know by emailing us at girlscamp@jazzschool.org. We will put interested families directly in touch with each other and leave the arrangements to you.
OUR FACULTY
We employ an all-woman faculty of professional musicians and educators from the Montclair Women’s Big Band and the Jazzschool. Our interns are college music students and recent college graduates, who provide additional role models.
INSTRUMENTATION/VOCALISTS
We accept all instrumentalists and girls want to sing. The only prerequisite for instrumentalists is some facility on the instrument; vocalists do not need experience. Campers bring their own instruments. We provide drumsets, cymbals, vibes, amps, pianos, keyboards, microphones and music stands.
Many girls elect to both play an instrument and sing. Scheduling permitting, we make our best effort to accommodate those who wish to play more than one instrument.
PLACEMENT AUDITION
After you register online at www.jazzschool.org/girlsreg, our auditions coordinator, Erika Oba, will contact you to schedule a short friendly placement audition, so we can get to know you and your playing. If you are unable to audition, we can gather enough information from you to place you in appropriate groups. We will then create your personal camp schedule tailored to your preferences.
ENSEMBLES
Teens
We place teens in their own instrumental ensembles, ability permitting. Most instrumentalists play in a Jazz Combo, a Blues/Soul Group and/or Big Band. Most vocalists sing in the Pop Vocal Group, Roots Music Choir, Songwriting and/or a Blues/Soul Group.
Jazz Combos
Instrumentalists are introduced to the standard American Jazz Repertoire and learn to improvise on chord changes
Blues/Soul Group
Instrumentalists and vocalists explore the Blues, from traditional Memphis and Chicago Styles to Soul, Funk and Motown and everyone solos.
Big Band (by audition)
This large ensemble plays traditional big band repertoire and is open to saxes, trumpets, trombones, piano, guitar, bass & drumset.
Roots Music Choir
Accompanied by a faculty rhythm section and open to everyone, the Choir explores the African American roots of jazz. Campers sing anything from Gospel to Blues to R&B, and there are opportunities for harmony singing and solos.
ELECTIVES
Improvisation Workshop
This hands-on class unlocks the secrets of improvisation, as campers learn to play and sing scales and practice using them to improvise in a supportive learning environment. Appropriate for older or more serious musicians.
Latin Ensemble
Instrumentalists play Latin American Jazz styles, from Bossa Nova to Salsa.
Songwriting
Under the direction of one of our vocal teachers, campers create original songs which they perform at the recital.
Percussion Ensemble
Campers play hand drums and percussion instruments (provided), learning specific rhythms to form an authentic performing percussion piece.
Pop Vocal Group
Accompanied by a faculty rhythm section, campers sing current popular tunes with harmony and solo opportunities.
LUNCHTIME JAM
The lunchtime break features a daily faculty-facilitated open Jam Session.
Campers can bring lunch, patronize the onsite Jazzcaffe or (with parental permission) walk to one of the many inexpensive eateries within a few blocks. Optional pre-paid daily lunch from the Jazzcaffe is available for $45. Parents are welcome to join the campers for lunch.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Each camper is scheduled for one 30-minute private lesson during the week, during the lunch hour. Lessons can be taken on any instrument or vocals.
