Manhattan-based author James Gavin (Deep in a Dream: The Long Night of Chet Baker, Intimate Nights: The Golden Age of New York Cabaret) returns to the Jazzschool to launch his new book, Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne — the first major biography of America’s groundbreaking black star and iconic beauty. Liz Smith has called Stormy Weather “magnificent,” adding: “I wish I could do justice to this book. I cannot. It is impossible to convey its power.” Maye Cavallaro will interview Gavin about the Lena Horne legend and his four-year journey through her turbulent life and times. Rare TV performances of Horne from the author’s collection will also be screened.

While best known as a soprano saxophonist, Steve Lacy was also a prolific composer. Saxophonist Josh Sinton first encountered this body of work while studying with Lacy, and, in the summer of 2004, he began organizing informal playing sessions to try out some of Lacy’s themes. He quickly formed Ideal Bread, a band that has gone on to be critically recognized as among the most cohesive in New York City’s music scene (“Best Debut of 2008” — the Village Voice Critics’ Poll).
